Repacking job gone south. Bolts were seized so they had to cut them out. Sam’s or more accurately Alex at Sam’s is saving my ass. All new stuffing boxes with a one nut adjustment $875 each. Can’t wait to see your baby. Hoping to be there in March if not I move north in April for the season and plan on spending many nights in the barn loving her up. Never heard of that. Those packing glands are bronze studs with stainless lock nuts. I can't believe they couldn't get the tightening nuts off.

Gimme a shout when yer on the way! Ill grab some pics of the udder rudders' when I get over there today. Part of the problem with contractors doing this kinda work is the inability to understand whats going on.... If they needed to cut the studs to unpack fine; but drop them out and redrill for new? Nah... too much like thinking/work. BUY NEW! I tried rolling yer starboard prop/shaft yesterday for grins. Wouldnt budge (bone dry right?) so dont let them tell you the trans is seized...YIKES! Bill

46 years I’ve never touched the rudder stuffing boxes. Never leaked a drop still don’t. Probably asbestos packing the good stuff. I’m still procrastinating on the shelf replacement. Anyone know if you take the top flange off that sits on the shelf if the rudders head towards the bottom? I’m doing it at the dock behind the house cause that’s where all my tools are. Was thinking about putting c clamps on the rudders and run a pair of ratchet straps up to the gunwale.

I’m told there aren’t replacement stuffing boxes available at least for my boat. However I believe Sam’s still had a few of the two stud version in stock. In my case it was more then just seized studs that necessitated a replacement.

Just make sure they're secure before you do it.

If those were seized, I can understand better why they MAY have needed to replace them. But as Bill said, I think that was the easy way out for the yard instead of really working to get them loose.

They the two stud type. Part of the problem was not being able to get the old stuffing out. Couldn't get the packing out? ? Even after dropping the shafts? At that point you can chisel it out from down below if you have to. I guess I still don't understand it. I'm just glad you were able to find the parts to get it back together.
