Here's the closest thing I ever had to a Duece and a half. We bought her new in 1976. It was a concrete mixer and then we turned it into a 6x6 winch truck. It had a 6v53n, a fuller with double low and locking differentials. Sorry, no turbo. I'm sure it was one of the last Diamond Reos built. I sold it a couple of years ago to a farmer. That's fairly Deuce-and-a-Half like. Cool truck, and I recognized that logo on the hood before you even said it. Haven't seen one in years. Oh, and with that Detroit I'm sure it did plenty of screaming even without a turbo. There used to be a lot of cool trucks out there. I remember a guy that had a Brockway with a 12V-71 crammed in it. He also had a fleet of Peterbuilts with 8V-92s. You could literally hear torque when they got on them. Yeah, she was a screamer, that's for sure. And she'd pull anything with that winch on there and a couple of pulley blocks. The hardest part was tying the front end to something solid. In the 70's we only bought Diamond Reos. The plant was just a few miles from our yard and they would build whatever we wanted. We even had a few tri-drives with three drive axles in the rear.

That reminds me, the guy was talking about the winch on the 2-1/2 and he said it was directly driven by the engine and it somehow involved the clutch. I'm guessing a PTO from the transmission. But it required an operator in the cab, unlike a hydraulic or electric winch.

Since this seems like a good place for unusual vehicles I thought I'd add this one. I was on my way home from Boston and heading over to catch the ferry back to L.I. when this turned up in front of me: This one is a 1957. My Mom had a 1959 that she bought here and picked up at the factory in Germany. IMHO the 190SL was probably the best car Mercedes ever built. Unfortunately it just wasn't feasible to keep it. I would love to get my hands on one today, but like most things exotic and wonderful I either need to find a fixer-upper or a winning Lotto ticket.

When I was in high school a friend of mine rescued a 190SL from a junk yard. Took him a year to do it but it was a wow car when he finished. His dad owned a body shop that did high end work so he had a bit of help. I'm partial to the Porsche 356B speedster but looks like even a junker will cost a pretty penny today. Seems like it wasn't too long ago that you could but a decent one for what they want for this one. www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/porsche/356b/1566600.html

Needs a water buffalo, or a 105mm towed howitzer behind it to complete the set... I'm starting to tear up!

But none of them are "cheap". Always remember that the guy selling the Porsche can ask whatever he wants. There was a guy selling a rusted block for a 190 that wanted $6K for it. Meanwhile a restorable car was going for 12. As far as the Porsche,... visions of James Dean go through my head. I'll stick with the Benz, but there's a lot more sentiment attached to that one for me.

Same thing with that 190. It was flawless. You sound like you have some connection to Deuce-and-a-halfs. Care to elaborate?

I'm sure you've got some good stories to tell. We'd love to hear some.
And hopefully without sounding trite; thank you for doing that.
