I saw that 58TC on egog and then noticed the 61 next to it... a quarter mil and a quarter ounce MITE get ya started. The 53 OTOH is complete and runs at least, and the owner knows at least something about it... maybe we should get freeturd to sea trial it! Just the initial pics on #3 shows better than what Ive got into mine. Citing market conditions etc, I wonder what a lowball offer on that 53 would do. Its been sleeping wet for 10 years... ws

I agree. I think the only one worth attempting to fix is the 53.

What concerns me with the 53 is the full paint job. That's going to be serious expensive.
The boat that has me intrigued is a 53C down in FL for $99k one of Birds buds is trying to sell.
I'll see if I can find a link.

The 61 caught my interest mostly because it's a 1982 with an 18' + beam. I think I know which one it is there was one that sunk after being damaged in one of the storms it was at the Vinoy Marina. I'm wondering if the hull is intact? It's just a few miles away from me so maybe I'll take a look. A friend of mine looked at the 53 and said it's not all that bad. He thought lots of hoses and clamps a bottom job and generator repair or replace and you've got a running boat.
In general the price of these boats has dropped so much and the price of parts and labor continues to rise. So I guess that's not a good combination for restoration.

I'm familiar with the 53MY in Tampa. I haven't been on it in a few years but I go past it regularly and know some history. The family that owns it has had it for some 20 years and is very much into boating (still). They just happen to have bought a much bigger boat a few years back (4-5) and used that one, not the Hatt. While the boat obviously needs a bunch of work, if the engines are running, I'll bet if you look at it you'll find an opportunity. I recall a few nice upgrades, (new fresh water flush heads for instance, gen set rebuild, but not assembled, heavier duty davit lift, nice pulpit)

Damn...just did a YW search for 53 Hatts under 100k looking for Randy's choice.
There's a bunch that appear in really good shape.
Brian, the 50-60k difference between a project and a turn key Hatt seems to make the additional purchase price a no brainer. Now if the 53 in the top link did not need full paint, then I would agree - replace the hoses, give her a tune up and off you go.

For the money I would go with the 61' but thats just me, I would probably get a lot of razz but I don't care.
The 1973 53' is maybe a better deal, not quite as big but is mostly intact, myself if I was able to get off my butt right now and fly out of Alaska would go down there and check this one out first. I can afford this one, but something draws me to the 61' like it has better karma.

The 53 is also an old customer of mine when I was with the Cruisair distributor here...
I haven't been on it for years either but it's a good boat that back then, was used regularly & kept clean.
The owner always serviced the A/C as needed back then, and though I have no history since...I think it reflects that he is a guy that at least keeps up on maintenance...Or did when it was his only boat.
There are some local guys I know here who could paint it fairly reasonably...They do Awlgrip/Sterling brush jobs that you couldn't tell weren't sprayed...Plus you get better coverage (mill/thickness)
Looks like a new Sentry Battery charger in the port engine room, so he at least spent recent "Good" money because he could have gone with a much cheaper charger...Not a better one mind you...But cheaper.

That 53' would be a good choice for someone that wants to take off somewhere in short order, its a running boat, in that year wasn't the Hatts more prone to hull blistering? I would expect a haulout and hull check on it before anything else, mostly it appears to need a lot of cleanup and paint, inside and out. The engines are naturals with low hours so unless they have a current problem not mentioned they should not need any serious attention short of hoses and clamps.
Logically this is a very good deal for a younger person thats skilled or looking for a liveaboard, if it had a hull check and passed this is one I would try to get, the 61' of course is basically a hull, no mention if they still have the engines.....but thats where I am interested in it, myself I'm just not too ready to take off cruising somewhere and spending $100 an hour in fuel, eventually it would get engines but I would downsize and find some very efficient modern fuel sippers, turn it into a long range trawler in effect.
I do have an area I'm not so experienced and thats interior woodwork, I know engines, electrical and glassing or steel/aluminum fabricating, so its a daunting challenge to me just looking at rebuilding the interiors, Lowes and Home Depot would smile knowing this. The 61' being newer should have an excellant hull....should that is, would be better to actually know, from YB he should have some interesting comments looking at another sub.
