What is wrong is the idiots down in Springfield. They don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. I agree that it is stupid and something is wrong but how do you fight the faceless, nameless, stupid people who tell us what we must do? Bill still has no names of the idiots in Springfield. Hopefully they will not be able to dispute this document that we will get this week. I truly think that we should make the 2 hours drive, each way, to deliver these papers in person and hopefully get this done in one day instead of 3-4 months. ppat

First why did the boat have to come out of documentation? If you know the HIN # why not just engrave it into the transom and do as Dave suggested to get a good professional looking imprint? That's probably going to be a lot easier than asking State employees to think. Brian Like Brian suggested getting a copy made at the engraving shop is cool. When you get boarded by some USCG zealot, all of a sudden its falsified. Its even worse explaining this stuff via a phone through bullet proof glass. Ya gotta remember, I AM THE ONE THAT WILL GET PINCHED!!! ws classic example of "PIMPS UP; HOs DOWN" what a name for a boat!! I disagree. You are reinstalling the HATTERAS FACTORY HIN. nothing improper about that. If you get boarded without a HIN in place, you will get grief.

You are absolutely right Dave! However, if I did this without authorization BEFORE hand, I could be held for "attempted deception". Ya see, I have to live my life by worst case scenarios! Tuesday, Ill ask the water cop what to do and suggest this. If he provides me with a sworn affidavit to go ahead, you can betcher do-das I will! I just want a smooth transition from U.S. to foreign waters and maybe, a return! ws

Dave, I am a witness to what Bill is saying. He has a curse on him when it comes to things like this. This is one of the reasons why I would like to move away from here. Last summer we were coming back from the lake on the HOG and we were almost run down by some one. That some one followed us a good part of the way back to the dock. The next day Gator had to hunt the guy down and tell him that he owned the HOG to get him to stop. Now you can ask why we didn't call the coast guard....I will tell you why. This person was part of an organization here on the lakes that works with them. Complaining wouldn't do any good. this person goes out of his way to harass Bill. If you would like the whole story...Bill will be happy to explain it but only in person. Next time you are down here he will tell you the WHOLE STORY!!! ppat

Those clowns in Springfield really know how to make one miserable.
When we bought our boat, the PO had taken the boat out of documentation and titled it with the state. I wanted the boat back in documentation, so I found the CG registration number, sent in the app and the next thing I know I have the documentation. Since our boat was old enough that it did not have a HIN engraved, just a little plaque that had 48YF303 engraved in it, the CG had generated one of their registration numbers for the boat. These numbers matched the HIN numbers that were on the title from the PO. I sent all this crap to the state and the RUT form with a check and then the fun began.
They tried to insist that I take the boat out of documentation, but I just kept told them No, if they wouldn't give me the registration and required stickers, I would cancel the check and move the boat across the river to Iowa, where I lived at the time.
Finally, there was a guy that had part of a clue and he got everything straightened out. He was probably laid of with all the cutbacks IL is making to save a buck.

I agree with Dave. I'd just reinstall the HIN. There is nothing wrong with that. You are not changing the number in any way and you don't need a letter to let you do it.
Put the numbers back on, trace them, get your registration, and be done with it.

How about you really screw with them.
Get a hold of the reverse tape number printer and have the numbers made.
Attach it to a piece of glass and then gelcoat and mat over it to make it solid.
peel it off and bring it to the people in Springfield telling them you pulled it off the covered part of the boat and what should you do now?

I think that Sky and Dave have the right idea. You are not changing the HIN, just making it once again visible. Do it and then send the idiots their etching and be done with it.
