Quick question for ya...
I have a 16K BTU Marine Air unit in my salon, it was diagnosed with a "bad compressor" this past season however I have it out of the boat now being looked at by a local guy whos known for finding a small switch on the bottom back side of the compressor that goes bad. Is this really the case?
The symptoms were as follows: Every time I would turn the unit on, it would work on fan but before it would engage the water pump and kick the compressor on it would trip the breaker in the boat shutting it down.

Sorry...Just noticed this post...Gotta kinda laugh too ;D A Guy that is know for finding a switch on the back side of the compressor ;D....Don't think I'd want to be known for that ;D Anyway...Yes there is a overload switch at the compressor connection terminals...It is the last protection in the circuit to the compressor, and will trip if the compressor is drawing heavy amperage, or if the compressor overheats...It is automatic reset...Meaning when it cools from either fault it will again make connection...It has a set of contacts on a bi-metal disc that warps with heat...That warping of the metal causes it to bend & thus separate the contacts. Yes it can go bad and is cheap to replace, but if it is bad, it went bad for a reason...Likely from tripping often....Again it is a form of last protection to prevent burning up wires...What were the symptoms leading up to this diagnosis ? I will say that most of the time it is indicative of a locked rotor compressor (motor locked) unless you have a bad compressor run capacitor. As ppat said...This would be better in the Fix My Boat section...I would have seen it sooner if you started a thread in there that was titled something like My A/C or anything with A/C...I watch for those. Steve~
