Ever stuff the bow in a 15 footer and blow the windshields out? That sounds like a good time dont it?
How about hitting a rogue wave on lake michigan, and having the cockpit sole frames bust with 10 people standing there? The deck landed on top of the motors, and by the time we got back in and on the hook, I realized that the slapping blew out a PLASTIC sumlog transducer and had water up to the cabin floor. I ran full throttle to the beach 2 miles away, and another 1/2 mile we wouldve been swimming. Worst day of having fun I ever had. I could feel my own paleness! ws

But........I have been out at night off of Big Sable Point with nothing but a depth sounder and a compass when big storm came through. My dad built the sounder. It was a Heathkit. Remember those? The problem was that we didn't know that it started over after it go to 199ft deep. So, when we noticed that it was only at 20ft, we started to head further off shore. Needless to say, it was a long night in that 36' Gulfstar trawler in a 7-8ft beam sea when we didn't have any idea where we were. Ended up following the Badger back into Ludington. It was a purdy sight to see what looked like a floating hotel come along. I was only 7 years old at the time. Even at that young age, it was a learning experience that I've never repeated. What was my dad thinking?

When my dad bought the Roamer it had the same Heathkit sounder, plus a Vexilar paper chart fish finder. Not to mention the 6 channel Bimini VHF. Made the Mactrip several times like you did with a nautical chart placemat of the lake for reference. I can imagine what our dads were thinking... 'tini time! ws

Imagine if you will a 33 foot 1960 pacemaker sportfish repowered with 165 HP CC 283 chevy conversions with a blazing to speed of 11 Kts.
On a run from Moriches inlet to the canyon (a long run of 90 miles or about 10 hours each way and uphill in both directions) we rip out a shaft log on the stbd engine. Taking on a bit more water than I could keep up with we switched the intake to the crash pump inlet. That helped except if we ran faster the water would run aft and the intake was useless so we figured it like this.
at 5-6 Kts we could keep the engine pulling the water out and make it back in about 15 hours or at 10Kts we could help the aft pump by bailing with 5 gal buckets. We chose the latter and ran home as fast as we could.
My friend was standing in the aft bilge with a bucket in one hand and a cigarette in the other for 2/3 of the run back and we ran right into the lift waiting for us at the marina. When we got there he notices his feet had a slight burn and attributed it to the 4 hours immersed in seawater. 2 days later he commented on the clearing of his athletes foot with no other explanation.
After all this fun when we opened up the area around the shaftlog to replace it I smelled gas. Suprised as I was the seam on one of the monel tanks had failed and we were pouring gas into the bilge for the ride home. Probably lost 50 Gals or so.
I tore up the deck and replaced all the tanks with new Aluminum ones and put the boat back together but never had such an interesting adventure.
I think the aft pump was still good and running in the boat when we retired her 5 years later.
FYI for electronics I had an RDF, 2 VHF radios, 2 paper chart recorders and a loran. The loran was the only one built in the 80's and that was far newer than all the other gear. Some RayJeff. Some heathkit and some sitex.

A hundred miles offshorein a 33 spacemaker? Thats pretty gutsy! An old timer here had a 33 Leek Bros (PM knock off) with 4-53s. She mustve run around 8-10 wide open. Thats something thats always freaked me out about wood boats. Remember that 57 connie that sank in the lake here last year? Another dad story... "...well kid they set the boat in at 4 pm Friday night, (1950 31ft Mathews) and wouldnnt be there for the weekend so I had them cut me loose and would let her soak overnight at the dock. I was laying in the bunk at 3 a.m. and rolled over and realized my arm was elbow deep in water. The lousy SINGLE 6 volt battery couldnt keep up with the dried seams." Man, what a rude awakening! ymw

That pace had at least 100 sisters on the ribs which is why I knew the fasteners were OK.
It was a blast running 2 day trips for them tuna fishes but we seemed to make it home OK. We did always have another boat or two with us so we kept an eye one each other but by todays standards it was a bit gutsy. Hell I know of professional captain that wont take a 50+ foot hatt with sound engine out of the sight of land. ;D

Only need 1 engine to go 2 miles and anchor at the sandbar.

No need to fix his boat if he can get everyone else to believe it's the norm.
