The Seneca bridge over the Illinois River soon will be falling down, falling down. At 7 a.m., the center span of the steel truss bridge will be blown up and toppled into the water 48 feet below. The button to implode the structure will be pushed by Jason Weinrich, a Seneca native and employee of Al's Body Shop, who won the honor by possessing the winning $2 raffle ticket, the Morris Daily Herald reported. A $24 million replacement bridge opened to traffic about two weeks ago. Seneca is located on the Illinois River between Morris and Ottawa, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago. The bridge over Illinois Highway 170 that is coming down this morning is 1,510 feet long. It was built in 1932 and reconstructed in 1986. After today's explosion, demolition crews will be given a maximum of 14 hours by the Coast Guard to haul the debris out of the center shipping channel of the river, the Daily Herald said. No boat traffic will be allowed on the river west of the implosion site until Friday. No spectators will be allowed within a 1,000-foot buffer zone surrounding the implosion site. Since the opening of the replacement bridge, construction crews have been removing concrete and asphalt from the deck of the old structure, along with all the steel that can safely be taken down. What's left of the old bridge after today will be blown up at a date yet to be announced. Raffle tickets will be sold for that event too.
