Bill, The mine mentioned in Williamston in the first link is what the locals always referred to as "the clay pit". We also have another area that I used to play in as a kid that was an old coal mining area. That is just north of the clay pit on the other side of the Red Cedar River.

Now see here... you got bored last winter and in between snows' you shoulda been out pickin'! I got a decent metal detector but everything around here is either $1M farms or has been "developed" and I use that term loosely! Even old schoolhouses have been rehabbed into "retreats". The only hope left is the beaches and the bunny huggers dont want you there either. The state's trying to mandate permits for metal detecting. Any finds need to be "evaluated" by a state approved archaeologist. IOW some shithead with a masters in AA history (fill in the appropriate AA part). ws
