Ol' Gator just came across a 6.5Kw Kohler generator. Its a gas job with a sound shield and the hourmeter shows 32 hours. Way more compact than the old MCCK jobs etc. Probably less than 300 lbs. This is a complete running takeout with an aqualift muffler and start panel. The model is 6.5 CZ 23 email if anyones interested! Heres a youtube of a similar unit.... ws

Any idea what year it is? I have one, but it's never worked correctly and it either needs to be replaced or come out of the boat and be repaired.
Ay idea what ol gator wants for it?

I'm an owner. I went and met Ole Gator in Rockford IL yesterday and picked up My prize, a 231#, 6.5kw, kohler marine gas genny. 36 hrs on it with a water frozen carb bowl that actually snapped the brass bowl bottom bolt in half, then dropped the bowl. Then continued to dribble gas on the lower half of the engine for quite a while, bubbling the paint and tray, that's the bad.
The good is, I scoped the cylinders and they are brand new, it runs well on carb cleaner. The engine is a honda GX360 10hp twin, water cooled by honda, it's a fairly common motor which means that I can bypass Kohlers $298 carb for the any, honda power sport dealers carb at $133, same carburetor. Kohler timing belt $58, hondas t belt $33. Everything else seems to work except a sticky starter solenoid switch plate, dont tell Kohler but the starter is from a toyota 4 cylinder. Plate switch kit from Napa $12.
Parts comin. Kiwi

Atta guy!
We expect updates... don't let us down.
I've also got a little generator project of my own cooking. We should compare notes sometime.

EXCELLENT! I thought Gator told me you glued the bowl together with J-B Weld! We were talking about it when he first got it and he mentioned the starter only clicked. I thought of a bad ground. So was that the whole kit with silencer and remote start? Make sure you use a strainer on the RW side with a seacock. ws

Hey Willy and Derek! Yes Gator gave the remote panel and sound shield in great shape (minus the Gator prints ) with exhaust hoses that are date stamped 1998. On the way back from Rockford yesterday I realized that I may have to pull the boats engine to get this thing installed. Well it just so happens that I've been working on a 300+ hp, 4mpg motor that runs on hopes and dreams, but pigs have not flown yet so I'm not quite finished. Does 3.4mpg count? Kiwi

Carb replaced, starter fixed, fuel pump brought back from the dead temporally. The motor runs wonderfully!! I almost understand the generator but not really. It's a brushless deal that uses residual magnetism to excite itself via a $10 AC run capacitor. . . . . . ya thats what I said. Anyway I'm out of My league here. Here's the Symptom: The ign coil stays grounded from the control box until it makes ac power, AKA push the start button and it will run until you release the starter button. If I pull the ign kill wire off of the coil, it will start and make AC power @62hz, 121v with a 1000 watt load onto it. It just seems to not make power fast enough on startup with the kill connected, for the right sequence of events to happen in the control box, and its driving Me F@#$^in nuts! After It makes ac (a second or so) I can reconnect the ign kill wire and it will work like its supposed to, and shut off when commanded to do so. A link to the schematic on P. 57-58 of this PDF. www.30plus.org/Chief_Plasma/Kohler-TP-5695.pdfHow does this thing work?? Governor is adjusted @3700rpm no load and 3600 loaded per spec. It's a kohler cz23 6.5 Kiwi

Probably an oil pressure switch to make sure its up to speed before "latching on". The westerbitch on the sub was like that and old onans have a centrifugal switch that does the same thing. That was driven off the same gear as the fuel pump (DIESEL). Hopefully Dave has recovered enuff by now to offer some input. Are you gonna swap motors? ws
