A while back you devised a puller for cutlass bearings. Can you repost or link that thred? Mine need replacing after 30+ years. Probably phenolic units with a tack welded or peined pair of set screws on each. Id rather not have to pull the shafts out. Finished up the shrink wrap job today. Trans and stuff is next, then some woodwork, then...

Bill, I can look for that post on the HOF, but what I did was to cut a piece of pipe in half on the band saw that would fit the shaft ID and be less than the strut OD so I could push it through. I made up some plates for either side of the strut and put four holes in them on the corners to accommodate threaded rod. The center had a hole the size of he OD of the cutlass bearing on one side and the size of the ID on the other so I could push out the bearings.

I can go one step further and spin the pusher in the lathe before cutting it. Ill also make a reciever to catch the shell when its ejected and use my H-D prop puller as the jack. These are phenolics so the should come out easy. Been in since 1990 so I can complain.

WOW! What a blast from the past! Even pispal was on you about the fully found machine shop right off the bat! When I did the subs' bearings there were 6. Two in the thru-hulls behind the stuffing boxes. "Usually" I go through the whole process of pulling the shafts and getting the wheels scanned (Kahlenberg is two blocks away) but shaft straightness seems OK... "No Rumbles". Just worn out bearings.

So... my little update. Started by using my 20 ton prop puller and had to deduce the pusher dimensions. Ended being 2 two inch pipe couplings with a 3 inch long nipple in between, all snugged together, brazed tight, and turned on the old South Bend to dimension. Thats 1-3/8 on the shaft and the strut ID of 2". Got down to the task and found the studs werent quite long enough so back to Retards for stud nuts. Lotsa cranking on the nuts with a 12 and 18 inch adjustable and finally got a "BANG" out of it yesterday. Gotta have the kid (Scott) do this on the ground while I stand next to him. Ive got some weird vertigo happening and cant lay flat. Its always something right? So at 20*F with a 30 mph breeze it was dang chilly. 4 hours yesterday, and 3 Monday plus a few hours of shop time and one is out. Fabbing all this stuff up in 1990 with stainless, I had everything bolted on, then tacked into position, then fully welded with the phenolic bearings in situ. Probably this tight due to some warpage after welding but cant complain. Well, still can but it wouldnt make a difference. Today is bearing #2. Keeping an eye out for a porta power jack. Maybe just a Harbor Fright job?? So the pics show the extractiom; The fuzzy part got a bit close to the propane torch to help expand the strut a bit, and the ID shows both ends. A few points to ponder. This is the starboard side. The shaft was wayy loose. The port side is OK. Its getting R&Rd as well. Big Bill addressed the point of a zinc that slid down against the bearing and was probably gonna starve it for water. Thanks BB! I think you nailed it. With all this going on, NEVER had any vibration from either side. Hmm Over the years this is probably 10 trips from Chicago to the MAK and all around up there plus every weekend a trip to the beach at least. Sky can appreciate that I hope!

It dont show, but when I got out to my truck this morning, my 1/2 bottle of Coke was frozen hard as a rock! Got her set up with a propane torch and some PB blaster to get things juiced up. and went in the truck for a smoke LOL. Came out and the bearing moved. Those are 3/4" Simplex studs (most of 'em) strained to POY (point of yield) yesterday and todays piece popped out like a baby! Done in an hour; with frozen fingers! So now, where do I get the new bearings? Phenolics are 99.00 and brass (NFG on the aluminum boat) are 123.00 ! These bastards used to be 30.00 when I did these in 1990.
