I bought the Sampson braid splicing kit years ago never could get the hang of splicing braid. I’ve spliced 3 strand since I was a kid. Always roll my own

Always burnt the ends of the strands with a lighter. Learned quickly that hot nylon burns when it drips. I begged the old man to buy me a can of whip end dip. Every time we’d go into a marine store I’d run get a can and put it on the counter. The old man would look at it ask the guy how much mumble “too GD expensive” and tell me to put it back.

well....the first one was a bitch. this is only going to be a permenant dock line at my dock. im sure some of the reason was that it was the outside wraps on the spool, sun beaten, dirty- even though i rinsed it off, it was kinda stiff. before i try the next one i am going to soak it in fabric softener.. as for the back splice...nope. i just whipped the end with small nylon string and plan to melt the end tomorrow.

We used to make barge hawser at the generating station from 2" samson cord, and simply roll it out to length, cut with a red hot knife, and make a bowline on one end. Cheating all the way, but they never wanted to take the time to do it right.
