Electrical stuff is not my strength. My shallow well jet pump has failed. It's 240v dedicated circuit with breaker. The new pump is 120v. At max, the new pump draws max 16 amps at 120v. I think I can just use 1 hot leg to power the new pump, but I'm not sure the old breaker would work. I'd like to replace the old airpax 30 amp double pole breaker with a 20 amp single breaker and blanking filler... but I'm not sure what I need. Type, source, good plan/bad plan.. any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Paul

Hey Paul... nice to see ya swing in once in a while! That 30amp Airpax should have a tye bar between two 15 amp breakers (probably remarked as a DP30). 15 amps should be OK, but if you feel safer, two breakers at 10 amps each from the same phase side on the panel (every other brkr. on the left OR right) should give you fair protection; unless theres a spare 10 and 15 amp breakers. If the judges are watching, run a 12 ga wire to the pump for 20 ampacity. Confused yet? Run a pair of 12s to a new breaker box by the pump. Couldnt you find a 220V pump?

Many of the breakers are a pair. Not just the trip bar but part of a 2 pole unit. Getting the right pump is the best fix. If not possible yo u may need a larger single breaker and you may need to upside the wire.

Of course I come over here when I need a credible answer to a technical question. For a large VOLUME of worthless answers, I'd go next door! I used to be able to go to home depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware and have a variety of shallow well pumps to choose from... sadly, not anymore. And usually those pumps could be configured either 120v or 240v... NOW, they don't stock them and for a 3/4 up, 850 gph pump... $250 to $450... thought about Headhunter. $2k.. so the China Man aka VEVOR, had a 1hp, 1150 gph pump for $120 and free shipping... but it's 120v, prewired with a plug. So, if I understand you, if I just use the one hot leg, I'll still get 15 amp protection from the 30 amp double pole breaker?.. I've still got my last well pump, Flotec, it's 240v runs, but needs a new impeller, so might go that route... now I'm using dock water, so no real crisis yet!

No. You get 30 amp protection from. A 2 pole 30 amp breaker. 30 on either leg will trip both.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I've still also got the 32v galley maid hooked up, but it leaks at the bearing so I haven't used it in a few years. Headhunter is very proud of their Mach 5, all in, tax, shipping, a little over $2k, for anybody that has one, are they worth it?

You need to run a neutral it still need’s 2 “legs” to stand on even electrical is basically physics as my EE professor used to say. Don’t use the bond/ground. You can use the old dead 220 conductor but I’d identify it with white tape on the ends. Scott will be horrified but I don’t think he’s going to tena sea anyway

And yeah a double 30 is 2 30s not 15’s doesn’t work that way should be #10 wire. You could cut the tie bar on the 30 and leave it in place. Even though the pump only draws 16 amps the breaker is there to protect the wiring not the device. I’d leave as much of the original setup in there as possible in case you say F chinaman and go back with a real pump

We have a Mach five that was $1500 before Covid, worth it. However it finds every leak your system has. Great pressure and very quiet. The ease of priming the pump is directly related to your LOA and the number of stairs encountered between faucets.
