AND THE PITCH... Trying to get some ducks in a row here. EARLY next spring Im gonna spend a few weeks prepping for paint on the Roamer. She had an Awlgrip spray job in 1987 which lasted until 2015. At that time we prepped it for a roll and tip with Interlux perfections. The current job has its share of faults that Id like to address for probably the last time on this tenure. Im OK with the interthane; it sands and buffs. The awlgrip doesnt, but I hate to pay for the name with shallow customer support. Last time I used awlcraft fairing compound which took several days to go off to sand. So this time around, Im thinking of trying ALEXSEAL... Theyve had 10+ years to perfect the recipe. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it. I intend on spraying it outside (where else??) inside a tent. This is gonna be from the top to the waterline. I hope I have the steam! Thoughts or ideas?? What about deceny fairing compound? The pic shows Chris cfafts nemis "sticky gray shit" bedding compound leaching under the paint. Thats just un-acceptable. Probably gonna cut the half round on a scarf joint to get under it and make the area shiny with a burr grinder so it never comes back. A scaft joint shows in the bottom pic. Thats teak bedded with 5200. One and done! Whats a long lasting fairing compound to use? NOTHING WITH TALC PLEASE! That SGS gets hot in the sun and becomes molten. Originally the toe rails were bedded with that and always had a broken edge joint. Nothing but trouble.

I have never had any experience with Alexseal. The new Imron sprays just fine. Not sure how long it will last but it seems good. Why not fair with West System? And everyone loves the Alwgrip 545 primer. It fills well and sands really nicely.

These all work well together.
Alexseal fairing compound (slow cure ) is great. Sands smooth as primer and easy to work with.
545 primer also a great choice.
The best support I've gotten is from Imron (axalta) with finish master and a great local rep.

If you use Imron, don't use the basecoat/clearcoat. Have them mix it as a single stage paint.

Thanks guys! The mixed IMRON still needs a catalyst right? How long before you can work with the ALEXSEAL fairing compound? I remember the 545 primer was a high build material. Gonna be a brazillion questions coming up as akk this stuff has really changed in the last ten + years...I seem to recall an ALEXSEAL DIST in Mich. It seems theyre all on the east coast. Wheres the best deak to be found??

The Utube guy boatworks had some good videos on rolling the Alex seal. No tipping required. When I was chartering I had a sign “Tipping is not a city in China” but yeah if you can skip the overspray that inevitably gets on everything might be better. I painted the Endless Bummer in 1980 with 15 gallons of Imron boot stripe to bridge. I rented a shed up on the tuckahoe river in Nj where they built work boats. Most of the crew there was Pagans MC members wasn’t any fancy pants yard. I hired 5 of their hang arounds who broke bad with DA sanders and knocked it out in 3 weeks. I did all the spraying because their painters wore no masks because it interfered with the joint they were smoking while painting. Yeah those runs will sand out. I just wore a charcoal respirator because no one knew what the effects were then but I’m still alive for now.

Bill
I use the fairing compound as the last of the day application so its cured in the morning. The faster cure version is harder to sand. It's so much better than the spot putty and won't have adhesion problems.

the alexseal paint rolls out great, they have roll and tip reducer and a special additive just to make the bubbles pop on their own so you dont have to tip. biggest problem i am having is keeping it thinned properly from start to finish. as for the best price, i have a dealer in new orleans and one in foley alabama and both are the exact same price so i think alexseal must set the price
