That looks excellent Warren! Now I hafta stir the pot; across the hall it was/is an ongoing arguement about which nut goes against the wheel first. WHY did you choose the skinny one first? And the clock is running... LOL Bill, I never really got far into fastener engineering in my early engineering career, so I'm far from an expert. I had always been under the impression jam nut first against the prop then large nut and this seemed to be the standard orientation on most boats I saw in the marina yards. This is also how we were instructed to install nuts by the boat builders when I worked at a new boat dealer as well. I have read theory about unloading the threads on the jam nut as you tighten up on the large nut, however there seems to be varying opinion on the internet. I went with what I knew worked and in reality, regardless of nut orientation, the two nut system is likely better than the single castellated nut that Chris-Craft used where you could never guarantee that you could get the prop as tight as possible AND get a pin slot lined up with the shaft pin hole.

To me the CC method was like a pipe fitting; always a bit tighter but never looser. Hmmm... On the two nut deal. Mikepussy from across the hall (insert roll eyes here)(Builder of 4 second hemi prostocks and the Fastest Norton motorcycle in the world) "instructed his minions on the HOF" the only way to do it was to seat the tapers with the big nut, remove and put the skinny nut on first and then the fat nut. He never lost a wheel between his dock and the pump out twice a year "On the 53 he runs...". He hated diamond plate in the ER too. Bet his dad made him kneel and say penance for hours at a time. If you inspect the prop bore, youll notice they are not a smooth taper. They are not bored but broached with a shalf dozen or so raised ribs to seat on the shafts. Thats akin to a stretch on a bolt to keep them tight. Another bone of contention was he always told people they needed to be lapped. Maybe since his were so overtightened the bores were flat; we'll never know... He's now the resident O-ring Spacex-spurt planning on landing on URANUS! FWIW I never lost a nut either LOL... When I was young I did weird stuff like make bolt on stainless V and intermediate struts when repowering, did the math on new props for the conversion from 283s to 454s etc...Smooth and strong at 4500 rpm~ I was about 30 when I did all this stuff. Way too old now! Now I argue with facefuck armchair admirals and spacex-spurt engineers; "you cant do that..." Anyway, that jobs looking great! ws

that zinc in the second picture is too close to the strutt, not allowing water flow to lubricate the rubber bushing. at least that is what i was told by an old boat yard guy

Thanks Bill! Yer right. These are actually about 10 years old and slated for R&R this spring. This one actually sides on the shaft (rolls on it). Ideally, these go about 4 inches up the line to keep from losing the shaft throught the gland should a coupling come off.

Old Decca super 101 sitting on the ground. It was THE radar in the day. PO claimed the Decca Super 101 worked when he brought the boat up from the Chesapeake back in 2011. It did power up for me, went through the motions but I couldn't see targets showing up on the display. When the crane came in October to drop the engines in I rigged the Decca and had him lift it to the ground. Based on what I can find online those radars installed were as much as a nice car back in the early '70s. I'm going back in with a lightly used 4' Raymarine 4kw Super HD Color I bought off a guy in Maine. It will be interfaced with Axiom 9s at both helms.

Yer doing beautiful work Warren! Carry on! The guy from Mass. that wants to do the trade is stoked about this deal. Im still waiting for some Sea Rat pics, but the Commander looks pretty doable. I think she'd flip up here with a minimum. The only drawback is the dude want to trailer them here and is putting a bunked 2 or 3 axle trailer together for the CC, and the SeaRat trailer is his brothers. Need to pic up one here and swap before the guy heads back east. The hit? ETA for now is like mid May and thats the selling season. Want to try and up that a few months/ So heres a few inside shots. Aint perfect, but none of us are.
