Neat stuff. Haven't been able to read it all yet, but lots to see there.
I'm always fascinated by things developed during the era when there was more engineering than guessing, but they didn't have computer simulation and had to actually try it to see if it worked.

That was my take as well. Electric motor driven Roots blowers? Stuff like that just to eliminate guesses on physical enegy losses driving aux. stuff engine mounted. Insert covid moment here; whats the term for phantom consumption Scrod? You use it a lot and Im drawing a blank! Still happens here... ws

Yep, parasitic
There were rumors that Detroit was working on hydraulic turbine supplemented turbochargers to generate manifold pressure at lower speeds to eliminate the roots blowers, but emissions finally killed them before they could take the next step.
Maybe just urban legend, maybe not. Who knows?
