masonite with white melamine... Sometimes I just draw a blank! Thats exactly what it is! I uses 2 small pieces in the head with lotsa trim and its held up well, but in the PH with a million leaking screws in the flybridge etc. a usual drip spot turns into a stain, then a compromise, then... failure. Retards has 1/4" PVC (?) sheets, but its too thick and almost 70.00 for a 4x8 with a irregular texture to it. This is gonna be swell. More pics to follow after the topcoat today. THE HEAT IS ON... ws Another few dozen reason to not use this stuff... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine

I must be getting old LOL... Is this where this post goes?? Yeah... well, the new aluminum panels are up and I had some nice 10 foot long pcs. of teak left over from the sub days, so it got re-sawn for batten trim. Went to fastenal the other other day for 300 screws. That used to be about $4.00 a hundred (.04C each!) and now are running in the $19.00-20.00/hundred range. HOLY CRAP! SS finish washers and maybe the fasteners too, all hecho en Chine. Sad times indeed. Teak trim has a nice red stain job and 2 coats of varnish; two more today then they go in. I realize no one filler stains the wood anymore, but I do. I use Interlux Red Mahogany. My one pint can is down to 1/2 and its 30 years old LOL. The stuff had turned into an almost clay like medium, so I added a few spoon fulls of linseed oil and mixed it up with my $6.00 hand held margarita blender. Came out creamy smooth and didnt even need to salt the rim haha. Progress is slow but sure. ws Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

You're probably lucky the stuff is Chinese. If it was made here it would be a buck a screw.
It all looks good. I admire your dedication as much as your workmanship.

Looks great, Bill. I use filler stain, but only on those light areas where water has gotten under my varnish. Its just a way to patch it up without sanding it all down. The stain is less noticeable than the light spot on the wood.

Yeah... I had an old timer tell me, "It hides a multitude of sins", and he was sure right! The 30 y.o. can-o-clay was always used with a splash of thinner to get some color back on the wood. Mixing it up with live-action linseed oil really helped. Nice deep uniform color against that snow white paint on the new panels looks like somebody came and did it. The whole job added maybe 10lbs to the boat. I just wished CC wouldve done this at Algonac. Lotsa wood was still en-vogue in the sixties tho... Gonna do the seam battens on the headliner today and then the port side panel. Still a ways away from being done, but definitely putting a notch in the belt. More pics tonight! ws

So yesterday, I got the two side panels installed and the seam battens in the headliner. The job turned out pretty well, with the side panels needing a little shim work to get the correct curved panel look. With luan, it was easy to just pull the into place, but the aluminum is a little less forgiving. Today Im gonna start refinishing a dozen or so trim pieces. Out of all the predrilled holes in this stuff, 47 out of 48 hit home. One was a dud and needed to be moved 1/4". I can live with that... ws

Thanks guys! Its gonna be sooo much easier to wash the crud and spider shit off with the boat brush and not soak up the water and "spoil" like that melamine crap did. Yesterday was sand and varnish all the trim, the port side structure and bulkhead and door in the pilot house. Turned out good. Ill give it a 97.
Today Im gonna go get a refill on the 40# propane tank and then the local CO-OP is coming over to fill the tanks with booze free regular gas. This is a partial payment from the tug owner so he has a method of tracking it and writing it off. Should only be 150 gallons at 2.99.9. Probably gonna do some fishing this summer! ws
