When I repowered from the OEM 283F 185 hp. models (flywheels forward) with Paragon gears, I had to set up the 454 Merc 330's and Velvet Drives on 4x4s just to ruff in some measurements. That got me close enough to call it "OK". Wanted to make sure of hull clearances. When the motors were set on the stringers I still had to notch out the 3X12 X 12 foot stringers to get the adjustable mounts where they needed to be. The inboard stringers were good, but the OB ones needed a 1 inch notch cut in at the front and rear. There was also an athwart rib that the very front of the trans laid on that needed a trim. If I slid the power unit aft, the prop was getting too close to the rudder. Dont forget theres some math back there too! Same time I cut the single one post aluminum strut (been broken and welded 2x) and bearing off and made a "V" strut plus added another single strut mid shaft. That ol' Roamer only had the rear strut and trans bearing to center an 11 foot shaft. ZERO shaft vibrations now. A suggestion??? Move them friggin' inlet strainers to an accessible area. Did that on the sun on the AFT side of the ER bulkhead so I can stand there and clean/drain PLUS easy access to the packing gland. Theres a ton of cleaning down there even if yer as clean as Capt Barf or whoever that "Capt" is on the HOF with the 51C in the admirals' blouse. Paint the bilge with ALKYD enamel and dont neglect piping arrangements before you cant access them. I'd still go through the side! LOL... ws Shafts will be made after the engines are in so length can be whatever we need. The struts will be new to accommodate the new 2.5" shafts. I will move the strainers as needed to make room. I don't anticipate any cutting of stringers or athwart members. We will need to rework the stringer caps so the mounts can sit in the proper location fwd/back, side/side, and height. Cleaning and painting is definitely happening and NO, I'm not going through the side. If it was an aluminum hull, then maybe.

These new engines are super quiet it's hard to tell it's a diesel but you will get more vibration with a 4 stroke engine especially at low RPM. The Hat mounts are strong but very little vibration isolation. We use Bushings Inc. mounts look them up they're what Cummins offers only at more than twice the price. I switched to them on the 61 and it made a difference. Brian Thanks, I will check those out. EDIT: Just looked them up. They are practically in my back yard, Rochester Hills, Michigan. Their mounts look nice.

Anyone know anything about Cat C8.7's? I found a pair brand new with gears and color Cat screens at a really great price. Not sure about them as they are made by Fiat for Cat and have a belt driven supercharger with an electromagnetic clutch that shuts off at higher RPM.

Its got some cool ideas to increase hp. Supercharger and turbo with electronics controlling it all. Its out about 5 years so durability is not proven but at 8.7 liters its size to hp rating is my concern.
A QSM11 is about 20% more displacement a d thered no replacement for displacement.

Cat's had so many issues with the smaller engines and it seems like they're always changing manufacturers. They come to us every year or so and never have anything in the 300 HP continuous class that's any good. How much HP are you looking to make?

The price is probably 40-50k less than the total Cummins package. Its a steal, but not if I end up having problems. I think the problem is that they hit the market at the wrong time with this engine. Everyone is going to outboards.

I'm meeting with the yard foreman tomorrow to try to determine if they will even fit with the gears that are on them. IF they won't, then That may make the decision for me.

40-50 less holy crap. I bought a pair of QSM11's around a year ago they were 80K for the pair add another 40K for 2 gears so your at 120 for the pair. Now that's keel cooled and 450HP continuous with the small screens so your set up is more but still that's a hell of a big price difference. I wouldn't worry about support Cat support is expensive but excellent. I'd worry more about buying a dog.

Its an Iveco 8.7 that they put into Case and New Holland tractors and 250kw Generac generators. It seems to get good reviews in that lower hp but it is unknown how they do as a marine engine. I have seen them in some Tiara's and some Serena's but have seen no comments anywhere by anyone that owns one. It make me a little nervous but as I said before, the price is tempting. Its actually 46k less than a set of QSM11's with gears.
