#2 went low sulfur in 1994. At that point the red dye started being used for tax purposes. Prior to that diesel fuel came in a rainbow of colors. Well,... mostly clear, green and red. But just like ULSD today very few refineries made anything that was higher sulfur once the low sulfur standard kicked in. The costs to convert back and forth, then cleaning and recertifying the sulfur content was, and is, prohibitive. The only difference in the fuels now is the additive packages and the handling in the distribution channel.

Ive heard they do that in Texas (and the SW areas) at rodeos. They walk down the line testing all the pick up trucks for taxed fuel. The aux. tanks in the bed are exempt for tractor use. Jimmy Bob refills his truck off'n that tank and gets a ticket on his windshield. Its not for the owner per se, but the tag owner on that particular truck. Reefers on freezer trailers are the same; untaxed. Do they drop a hose in the tank and pull a sample? The rodeo jobs are field tested and not sent to a lab. They just look for color. ws Yeah they go in with a small hose connected to a suction gun and then push it out into a jar. They had a tough time getting that hose in the Ford truck has a couple of bends in the fuel fill line. I guess very few people challenge it. When the judge found out it wasn't tested he told the DOT attorney "you need a test by an accredited lab and a chain of custody don't come here un prepared again" Brian

Like Scott said, toss a quart of Marvel mystery oil in the tank. You would need a lab to verify anything less. The burden of proof would be on the state... ws

Better yet, put a few quarts of HFO in your diesel! Make it black...black is beautiful they say. Black fuel matters. We switched over to HFO yesterday. This new low sulfur stuff is pretty thin, hardly have to heat it up!

Well. I have a yard that is willing to do the engine/drivetrain swap. I have prices coming from cummins and cat. This is not a done deal, but its officially in the "investigation" phase. The plan would be to have everything on hand and pull the boat in August and do the swap, then finish it all up over the winter of 21-22. I would also convert all 32v items to 24v at the same time. We'll see how the numbers come out and if it feels right.

Make a package deal to unload it ALL! AKA... thats the easy part! ws Don't do as I do. Do as I say. I'm not so much for keeping everything original. I just post that because I don't want idiots trying to change things on these boats. They end up making things worse and then no one can bring them back.

Cummins screwed up again. Pispal is all bent out of shape because the oil filters are not where he wants them. And he did t use the supplied remote adapters why?
I think you need to get his opinion on how to do this right.

I think you need to get his opinion on how to do this right. He happens to be the very last person I will consult. I saw how he messed up and ordered down angle gears and then had to carve up his stringers to get the engines to line up with the running gear. No thank you. But the repower expert from Cummins that I spoke with was very helpful.
