For some reason I thought you made a follow-up system in house and wanted to pick your brain. But a non-followup is simple and bullet proof.
I have cockpit throttle controls and was just thinking of the simplest way to add rudder control. The previous owner would bring the autopilot remote down.

Time to buy is coming up in the next month or two! 2inch shaft 3" stern tube. Best prices I can find are: $335 for packing box www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/00pb200g-packing-boxes-self-aligning-bolt-gland-type$436 for the Lasdrop Gen 2 www.sailorsams.com/Lasdrop_Gen_2_Shaft_SealCheck out the pics. Coupling came off shaft super easy on both sides. Unbolting the flange from the transmission took more time because I had to use open end wrenches...a socket (with impact gun) won't fit around the bolt head. I may replace with socket-cap (allen) head bolts for ease of maintenance in the future. Lucky for me Bubba left plenty of anti-sieze on the bolts + fresh water, so all came apart easily. Starboard side had a tides lip seal (like a normal grease seal). It was still in good shape and had two spares mounted on the shaft. It's like $500! No groove on the shaft either. I could still run it for a long time. Port side was the goofy Duramax seal. It kind of looks like a lego project. The metal face rubs against some sort of hard plastic green shit. First the TIDES lip seal: The Duramax

Hey Krush... remember back in the real world that green plastic thing should be ceramic faced. With that plastic deal, a few seconds without cooling water is gonna smoke it like some cheap weeds LOL... You were lucky the couplings were split. The bigger ones are pulled up asshole tight on a taper (like a prop) and sucked to remove! ws

Right on Willy. I was surprised too at the seal face. And this is from Duramax, the company we all use for Cutless(TM) bearings and packing. It's odd that they put out such a goofy LEGO device.
The Tides seal is still in excellent condition. I could put it back on and get the same for the otherside. But I think you, rsmith, Brian, Scott all convinced me to go with packing. If I cus you all in the future, it's not too hard to change over to a shaft seal.
HEAR THAT EVERYBODY? I'm GOING TO LISTEN TO YOU!

I agree with the choice for old school packing. I've got PSS dripless on this boat and they've been just fine but I still don't trust em.

LasDrop GenII is what I would go with. I've fingerfucked them in person at FLIBS and talked to the owner of company for a long time. It's legit and likely the best design out there. But modern packing and a catch sump is probably good enough!

Mine has PSS seals and I have no complaints. Never had any issues and I like them. But if the boat hadn't come with them I doubt I could justify installing them considering the packing materials available today.
But what's not to like? It's the same seal technology as most water pumps. Why the hate?
