This aint the auto mag, but still a .50 magnum. I had the Ruger Redhawk .44 mag and that was a handful! ws The .44 auto mag... www.guns.com/2013/03/13/the-44-automag-pistol-the-forgotten-handcannon/All the super calibers are cool no doubt, but after the ferguson apocalypse, I wanna be able to drive through the front window at a hardware store and get ammo, hence the common stuff like my .45, 30-06 and 12 ga stuff plus a multitude of .22 LR stuff that fire S-L-&LR ammo. Same for a .357/.38. Look at the link above at the auto mag cartridges. Try to buy them at a K-mart... aint gonna happen. Would I own one? Sure as hell; with an army ammo can full of ammo too! A pal of mine has his gramps 5mm mag bolt action squirrel gun (a lot like a .223). Gotta save the brass and reload yer self... UN-AVAILABLE. That's where I get a kick out of flicks like walking dead where the crew all has weird eastern block made weapons and fire 100 round brsts time after time... where they gonna find 6.62 X 75mm ammo? Makes a great hammer tho...

They get pretty ridiculous after a while. A friend has a 454 Casull and sure it's impressive, but nobody wants to shoot the G-D thing because it's like punishment. A .44 Mag is about the limit of what's tolerable. Bigger than that is just novelty and chest thumping. Although I have to say them Hebrews make a bad @$$ automatic. If I was looking to go bigger I'd consider a Desert Eagle in .50 AE. I don't think they're legal in NY anymore because of some assinine weight rule they have. Like you're going to conceal a howitzer. Stupid.

Per your link Willy:
"This gives the round almost the exact performance envelope of a .44 Remington Magnum."
So let's not be calling the Anaconda a peashooter.
And I agree 100%. There's a lot to be said for miltary or very popular commercial calibers.

I gotta tell you that I had an "acquaintance" that I would go pistol "plinking" with... He happened to be on the Thompson (as in Center Contender) factory pistol team. His idea of plinking was to bring out a case with all kinds of target goodies. The best was a TCC, that I looked over and although only a single shot, looked pretty neat. Bolt action handgun at .22 caliber, which for Olympic style matches is the caliber. OK, so the opens a box of match ammo and its .22 alright, followed by a necked down 30-06 cartridge. That's when we would shoot outside and never wear hearing protection. My ears were already ringing after 100 rds of .45s and .357s but when this thing went off my ears went black for about a week. ADDENDUM... so we were out by the strip mines 60 miles SW of Chicago and shooting against a berm, and here comes Davey Crocket; Hmmm, all dressed in fringe and a coonskin hat and a .50 black powder muzzle loader. We set some stuff up to plink away at and this guy's ramming his load home. His turn comes up, he kneels on one knee and pulls the hammer back and KAWOOOOM! Like a smoke bomb went off. He spits a wad of shit on the ground and says "did I hit it???" Couldn't tell until the smoke cleared. Wasn't nuthin' like TV... ws

I met a boater in Northern Michigan that owns a small ammunition factory up there. He is now exclusively producing 40 S&W for the military. It didn't used to be that way, but he can make more money with just the government contracts so that is all he makes and he is at full capacity.
Like you said, stick with what is widely available.

What is widely available anymore?
.22 and 9 mm is hard to find. How much more do I need?
I guess I'll never know.
