Anyways, at the juncture of yay or nay, thnk Im gonna continue with pulling the shafts out for the bearing change. The intermediate bearings are way closer to the hull which means making more tooling for another puller. Im gonna use the puller on the couplings which are asshole tight, pop the shafts and use this and a stud to pull the forward bearings. This stuff has all been in since 1990, so I guess its ready for service.

Sure cant beat having a lathe on site. Its only a 9 inch South Bend ... 1938! So the red ATF is not so much. Velvet Drives suck to drain OR suck the oil out. Got 1-1/2 quarts out of 3-1/2 due, so Im going in underneath and pulling the cooler pipe and using a bucket. The pipes both have to come off regardless. I listened to an exspurt when I did this job and re-ran all the lines with heavy copper instead of hoses. I think Im going back with blue hose. Like an AN 6; that equates to 3/8 which was OEM. I did trans lines on my 1072 Buick a few years ago and it was a breeze even going through the frame rails etc. I need the flexibility that the hoses give for access and even some non work hardening. I saved the old hoses for spares aboard so dupilicating will be easy! The V/Ds weigh in at about 300 lbs. I remember the MH25s on the sub at about 1200. THAT was brutal. Already tuned up on Alieve so Im goin' in. SOLO. Like Johnny Cash... one piece at a time... Getting too old for this shit! The bottom thing is for women, but we can still relate to a few.

Just thinking of Herr Schmidt being 75 feet away from the dock; Hmmm. Im 6 blocks, down from a 45 mile mile drive each way across the dark continent. 30 years ago, I cut up and disposed of a 44 TC Chris for the new motors. They had about 5 hours on 'em. Gutted the Roamer, regasketed the motors, tore out all the running gear (angles changed) fabbed up new struts and glands etc etc all while still working odd shifts ets so I could sneak in some government work LOL...PLUS materials. Yikes. Now it takes the ol' fat guy 3 days to unbolt and pull the trans. Itll be home tomorrow on the bench!

More work but at least it will be done right when you're finished with it.
