Go with what you know works. I send pumps to Depco every few years to be brought back to spec 100%. It's well worth it. Never had an issue with their work. They have found many issues I'd have overlooked.

I always used Jabsco impellers. On the new Cats, they are bronze impellers. I wonder how long those are supposed to go before they need service. I see nothing in the manual about replacing/rebuilding any part of that raw water pump.

Thats really odd. Those CAT pumps must be mounted really low to ensure self priming. The DDs are almost at the top of the engines driven off one of the camshafts. I guess you need to be doubly sure the sea strainers are full and moving water. Are you sure those arent an after market pump that was spec'd by CAT as an accessory?

on my 46 with 8v71ti's, after a haul out or impeller change i would have to hit the throttle with a quick burst or it would take about 1 minute for the pumps to pull water that high.

I guess you need to be doubly sure the sea strainers are full and moving water. Are you sure those arent an after market pump that was spec'd by CAT as an accessory? They are mounted low. All part of the original marinization. I was told by an old timer of some self priming pumps with metal "fingers" that slid out and followed a cam like the rubber impellers. He told me those things lasted for years. I had never heard of them and I don't think these are of that design. They look like a centrifugal type that would need priming. All I know is when started, they pumped water. I remember when dad bought the Roamer there was 2 gear pumps from Chris Craft on the 283s. Every year they were seized up and required loosening the end covers and squirting grease inside to free them up. First job was to dump them and install Sherwood (Jabsco impeller) pumps. End of that issue. The Jabsco's are made for a "suction lift". Centrifugal pumps need to be below the water line or have a priming line built in. Just like a trash pump with a suction foot valve in the pick up hose.

i'm sure i could have but i didnt think of it at the time. no they were not moved, when i bought her she had the big groko strainers behind the engines. a couple of years ago i changed to the south bay strainers... freed up a lot of space in the engine rooms and have worked great.

So SKY, were those like centrifugal vanes that ran in an eliptical bore to intake water and compress it for pupmping. Kinda like an impact air drill vane set? www.ato.com/what-is-vane-air-motor

I don’t know if their still made but a friend of mine swore by these Barco silicone run dry impellers. He was using them on his sterndrive go fast Foutain. I got a set for the Hatt didn’t make it to the icw before they spun in the hubs. Barco argued with me said they were old stock from the distributor I got them from. How do you know? No dates on any of this stuff. I’ve looked at the Jabsco impellers too no dates. I don’t know how well these age on the shelf but is seems like everything rubber these days turns to shit in no time. I had a 18 month old set of Goodforayears on the that had dry rot cracking. Hand truck tires trailer tires seems in 6 months they all start to crack. And the smell I picked up an air hose at Black Friday home cheepo the smell from it gassing off was so bad it stunk up the whole shop. Had th throw it outside.
