Now ya hurt my feelings! Just think of all the crud and nastiness of those old DDs with black handprints all over the place, then think how easy it would be to clean and paint the ERs being sealed of from the interior as well. Since mikepussy retired from being resident exspurt, you could get him over to repaint the hull side. After reglassing the hole back in all youd need is a quart of paint. ws

Quit thinking and run what you got. My MH gears have been spinning in neutral for more hours than you have total. Worried about parts? You can probably but a set of 6/92 with gears for peanuts and stick them in a warehouse some where. I’ve been dickering with a guy with a set of 12/ns and MH gears for less than 3k I just need Krush to go get them for me. When it comes right down to it, I'll probably do just that. Run em!!

There is a yard near me that routinely cut a section of bottom out of Grand Banks Trawlers to replace steel fuel tanks.

Too bad it's not steel where cutting her open is the easiest way!
I'm a big fan of kicking big decisions like this down the road a year or two. It really lets one figure out what is needed vs just wanted. Also, I think you will have a great selection of nice used fresh-water boats to pick from sooner, rather than later.
A modern raised-pilothouse boat with a cockpit is so much superior to the classic 53 flush deck design. You should be able to buy a new (used) boat with modern engines for the cost of the repower and refit. Your time and headache managing the job must be accounted for as well.
Or you could be insane like frenchy and go all in on a rewpower lol

Half in at best krush. His boat is probably worth half of what he paid for the engines. If not less. Disposing of old boats is not cheap

Call me crazy but that's part of the appeal to this. When I'm done, I would have exactly what I want. On the other hand, picking up something different(newer) sounds like a good option as well. But, if you're going to compare me to frenchie, then this deal is definitely off.
