Im really surprised at yooz guys! Go old school, with adjustable packing. Any failure or abrasive stuff grind at those seals and its a trip to the travelift. Krush... you especially. Remember those seals need filtered water to run on. Silty (even disolved salts!) can eat that carbon ring for a snack! ws

My mind is not fully made up and I still have a while before I order the parts (I have to pull the shafts).
My boat has had drip-less seals in it for 20 years with zero maintence done on them. That's pretty good service, IMHO. I can say I would never install the PSS system with the stupid set screws.
I really like dry bilges and I know modern packing gives almost dry bilges. But there are thousands of these seals on boats that get thousands of hours every year and do fine.
Also, the plan is for my boat to live on a lift in the near future......I'm spoiled.

I'm sure you selected the best drip-less shaft seals the question is why add complexity to accomplish nothing. Our boats are dry bilge by design and most are used daily in dirty water. Every 6 months or so they go from damp to a little puddle and need a 1/2 turn of adjustment. There is no reason to add a special device to save 5 minutes every six months or probably much longer in your case.

Dont forget that 20 years of faithful service was also about 20 hours of sea (lake) time. I use graphite packing and "maybe" adjust the shafts and rudders 1/2 turn every 5 or six years. ws

What stuff stuffing box brand/model do you install on the tugs and what packing brand? I can put a drip container under the shaft. |

Buck Algonquin who has Changed names to Hydrasearch www.hydrasearchrecreational.com/. To accomplish what you want you need to use one that is a close fit around .020 over shaft size. We found that to be the key. Packing I'll take a look at a box and get back. Brian |

What steering system do you install? I recall you saying you use the jog "joystick" system.

Non follow up jog stick system that we build. 12V hydraulic power unit operates a 2X12 cylinder controlled by a drum switch with a Raritan rudder angle indicator.
