Willy's birthday is coming up and he needs/wants a depth finder. But, try to get details out of him is impossible.
Ideas, suggestions?? Please give as much detail as possible. Model #, brand whatever else I might need. I will be at the Mall of America this weekend ( leaving Thursday) and hopefully will find time and store to look around.

Its not as much the depth sounder as the transducer.
Thats the part that can be expensive.
look at the garmin Striker 7DV

What is your purpose? Do you just want to know the depth? Do you want to be able to see the thermocline or identify species of fish? Do you want a side scan so Willy can scout wrecks to dive? Lots of different stuff out there and different budgets.

Right now I am running a Humminbird ProAngler 400TX that at the time was state of the art LOL. It does speed, temp, depth, sumlog and good to 1000 feet I do believe. Since new in about 2000 its never been WAF (worth a fork) at anything over idle speed. The speedo kinda works but its' iffy, and the depth just flashes random numbers. The transducer(s) is always clean (externally mounted)so that's not the issue. Originally the boat had a Heathkit flasher and it was ridiculously accurate. As always, the stuff is new and improved and NWAF (not worth a fork). When I did the original refit in 1986 I was talked into replacing the overhead console stuff with all NEW matching equipment. I don't recall the make, but it all came from Edson N.J. The fume detector; NFG. depth; NFG, sum log NFG. I wont ever do a through hull again since slapping bottom after a rogue wave on the lake busted the plastic housing blowing the transducer outa the bottom. It was a removable type for cleaning with a replaceable blank while servicing the unit. The plastic retaining nut cracked and popped the plug. Damn near lost the boat; water was up to the lower sole so we headed for the beach in a hurry, bailing all the way with 3 bilge pumps running too. Sooo glad we weren't out in open water! ws The first pic is an oldie of the Edson shit The HB400 Proangler This guy hasn't failed me yet but it don't do DEPTH!

OK... so the big 'ol dummy needs some help LOL... Been looking at the Garmin Striker 7DV; pretty neat. So the difference between the 7DV and the 7SV is that's a side scan unit? Wheres the 5DV fit in? Color? HOW LONG ARE THE TRANSDUCER CABLES? That's not in the spec sheet, but the extensions sure as hell are! At 10 feet each (2 req'd) BTW. Do these units(5s and 7s) require 2 TDs each? I see one runs GPS for speed but I don't need another GPS unit as I have the 192C stand alone job. Wheres the best deal to be had? The Garmin Direct Outlet (free shipping) is the same $$$ as anywhere else.
Need more help on this one please! ws

The 5 and 7 are size 9f screens. The gps on the striker is not a map or chart plotter. It's hard to find a cheap depth only unit. I still have a furuno that needs a ducer or you can put an end on the transom mount I have. flybridge.proboards.com/thread/2259/furuno-fcv-582l

Expect a phone call Monday Scott ( badhattitude). The garmin Striker 7DV sounds like it will be the one. Willy spent 1/2 hour on phone with Garmin.
We are coming home this morning or early afternoon.
